From the President’s Corner:

Redwing Pond House: We’re moving forward! The Friends’ Search Committee (Linda Grumman, Anne Smith, Wendy Sabol, Donna Lindgren, and myself) received thirty-plus applications and interviewed more than a dozen great candidates for the position of Director/Head Teacher at the Redwing Pond House Nature-Based Preschool. FANCI has hired Jacqueline ěJackieî Lema as the Director/Head Teacher, and she has really been doing a dynamite job to try and have the school licensed and opened by September, 2011. Thank you, Jackie!

Earth Day: Many thanks go out to all the staff and volunteers who helped make our Earth Day celebration a great success. See the list of names in the left column of this page.

Grant: We owe Naugatuck Savings Bank a big ěthank youî for the Community Awards grant of $1877, presented to FANCI on May 11, 2011. WOW!

Annual Meeting: Don’t forget to RSVP for the Annual Meeting on June 8, which we are planning to have at the Redwing Pond House. Elections of officers will be held at the meeting. Nominations from the floor will be welcomed. Hope to see you there!

In loving memory of Juniper

With sadness, we announce that Juniper, a feisty little Grey Screech Owl, passed away on March 22, 2011. Impaired by a bum leg caused by an old injury, Juniper had been a resident animal ambassador at the Nature Center since he was found, undernourished, in the pumpkin patch at the Jones Tree Farm in Shelton about a year and a half ago. We'd like to acknowledge and thank him for the important role he played in our educational programs, teaching about raptors and promoting environmental awareness. He will be sorely missed! Donations to our Animal Care fund in Juniper's memory will be gratefully accepted; checks should be made payable to FANCI.

QUOTE OF THE SEASON:

“I’m proud that our property rates a bird’s approval. But I wish its richness to be valued by humans, too. I want us as a culture to depart from the old tradition of evaluating land according to what can be extracted from it as commodity or abstracted from it as social asset and turn instead toward a new tradition of valuing land by the life it harbors.”

–From Noah's Garden: Restoring the Ecology of Our Own Backyards by Sara B. Stein, 1993

We’d like to share letters we received:

The Ansonia Nature Center has allowed my children to see many things, from bats to stargazing to camping trips. People use a lot of time and effort planning day trips for their children when they don’t even realize what is in their own backyard. There are so many teachable moments. Your staff is dedicated to teaching about nature, wildlife, and how to become one with nature. We’ve had many great moments, especially your annual camping trip. Please accept this small donation and our hope of a better 2011.

Respectfully, (A Local Family)

To our friends of the wildlife:

I am writing this note to thank you for the compassion and care you gave to an injured Mourning Dove that I brought in to you a few weeks ago. After finding the injured bird by the roadside one morning while walking, I was unsure what to do or how to care for it. I scooped it up into a box with a few towels and brought it to my front yard, assuming it would be dead in a few hours. Upon my returning from work, I was overjoyed to see it very much alive and trying to walk. It became a family quest to help this sweet, lovely bird. My daughter called a few local veterinarian offices (most of them were closed) and then a neighbor suggested giving you a call. Being new to the area, I was unaware of the existence of the Nature Center. Being raised in the city, I was so thankful to have someone to turn to since I had never seen a Mourning Dove before and knew that it needed professional care.

I eagerly brought the bird to your center. Upon my arrival, I was overwhelmed at the beauty of the center and the decor and size of the facility. I was greeted by wonderful, caring people who gave me so much information and answered all of my questions. I was comforted every time I called to check on the progress of the bird (who I affectionately named Bella for her beauty), and the warm responses were more than I had ever imagined. Her caregivers gave me updated reports and their love for animals was reflected in their kind words. I was so disappointed to learn that Bella’s injury did not heal and she had to be put to sleep. I am, however, so very grateful that she was taken care of, had a warm place to sleep and food to eat in her final days. I could not bear to think of her alone, afraid and left hurt on the side of the road. I truly believe that for all of the time, patience, effort and love given to Bella (and all those you care for), it will one day be returned to you a thousandfold.

To all of you who care for God’s creatures day in and day out, I am extending an extremely huge THANK YOU from those that cannot speak for themselves. It is people like you that make this world a brighter, happier, safer, and more peaceful place to live. Have a wonderful day and keep up the fantastic job! It is so very much appreciated, probably more than you will ever know. You have touched my heart and it will never be forgotten.

With fondest regards, (An Animal Lover)

HIKING WITH YOUR DOG
Including your dog in as much of your leisure activities as possible makes for a better relationship between you and your best friend. Taking your buddy hiking gives him or her a break from the usual routine by providing new and exciting sensory stimuli. Here is some useful information to help make your day together in the great out of doors enjoyable and safe.
EQUIPMENT YOU WILL NEED (for trips of three hours or less here on our trail system): A 6 foot lead, preferably of cotton webbing. A metal link choke collar or nylon safety choke. A small plastic dish for water (a tub margarine container will do). Water from home.
ETIQUETTE AND SAFETY
DO…

• keep your dog on a lead AT ALL TIMES. The woods are home to all sorts of critters your dog might like to chase. Allowing this to happen is unfair to the inhabitants and to other hikers and is potentially dangerous to all.

• be sure your dog has an up-to-date rabies vaccination. The rabies tag should be attached to your dog’s collar.

• affix ID tags to your dog’s collar, including the dog’s name, your name, address and phone number, plus the name and number where you may be reached if you are staying away from home.

• CLEAN UP the solid waste your dog leaves on the trail.

• treat your dog for fleas and ticks, as necessary, BEFORE you hike.

• be sure to protect your dog’s ears and other vulnerable areas from black flies with canine fly repellent ointment.

DON’T…

• EVER let your dog run off lead, EVER!!!

• let him or her drink out of stagnant pools of water, or any natural body of water. if at all possible. This is to prevent bacterial or parasitic infections (such as Giardia).

• let your dog eat carrion or any plant or organic matter.

• hike with a female in season. You’d be amazed how males seem to appear out of nowhere to court your lady.

• hike with a sick dog or one not in physical condition for the length or difficulty of the outing.
