FANCI’s Future and Features

With funding provided by the state of Connecticut and Senator Joe Crisco, the question, Where do we go from here? was on our minds and was the reason for the Nature Center’s invitation to and subsequent visit from the Association of Nature Center Administrators (ANCA) this spring. For three days at the end of March, a team of four ANCA representatives toured, interviewed, and observed various operations performed by the staff and volunteers at our Nature Center. This professional peer review began with a kickoff breakfast at Ansonia’s Café Taste. Brief discussions were conducted with key town and state officials, representatives of the Nature Center staff, FANCI members, and the four-person ANCA team. With the pending final report from ANCA, and additional contact with local officials and Nature Center representatives, we hope to have a valuable “road map” for FANCI and our park staff to follow in improving our educational and recreational programs as well as our park and buildings and, of course, attracting more volunteer involvement.

Your ideas and input are important, so keep your membership current and start by attending our Annual Meeting on June 11, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. with a potluck supper followed by our regular meeting at 7:00 p.m. Add your vote to elect this year’s officers. The Nominating Committee has presented the following slate of officers to be considered:

President: Rich Wade
Vice President: Mary Tolnai
Secretary: Christine Boulay
Assistant Secretary: Norma Jean Moore
Treasurer: Venisa Riebe
Assistant Treasurer: Anne Smith

Other nominations will be welcomed by FANCI members at this time. Please call us at 736-1053 if you plan to attend so that sufficient seating can be arranged. This is a good time to get involved!

And mark your calendars for Saturday, June 14, Open House Day at the Ansonia Nature Center. Think Globally, Eat Locally!

--Rich Wade, FANCI President

Adopt a Trail or Garden

Do you like to work outside? Are you looking for volunteer work? How about adopting a trail or garden at the Nature Center?

If you like trail work, you can choose from the Raptor Woods Trail, the Self Guided Trail, the Redwing Pond Trail, the Mead School Trail, and the Old Milan Road Trail. All of our trails need constant care, which includes clipping, litter removal, and general maintenance.

If you prefer gardens, you can choose from the Connecticut Woodland Garden, the Perennial Garden, or the Butterfly/Bird Garden, all adjacent to the Visitors’ Center; and the Inch by Inch children’s garden at the Redwing Pond House and the landscaping around the Pond House. Garden care includes weeding, mulching, dividing, and pruning.

These are great activities for individuals as well as organizations!
